Financial aid is available for Summer Session, but on a very limited basis. Summer is considered the fourth quarter of the academic year, therefore awarding of federal aid, such as the Stafford Loan or Pell Grant, will be limited to a student's remaining eligibility from the current academic year. Availability of University-based aid, such as Northwestern Scholarship, is dependent upon funds remaining after all financial aid awards have been finalized for the regular academic year. For this reason, in addition to the normal criteria used to determine aid eligibility, the Financial Aid Office weighs a student's need to attend summer school before awarding such assistance.
The Financial Aid Application for Summer Session consists
of a single student application for all summer programs, including
study abroad and field studies. Where appropriate, additional documentation may be required to clarify an applicant's circumstances. The Office of Financial Aid may
also choose to contact an applicant's dean for more information in order to prioritize distribution of any available scholarship
assistance.
When considering a student for University-based assistance, preference is given to those who demonstrate a real need to attend Summer Session; for instance, those who must take classes during the summer in order to graduate on time, or those who wish to participate in programs only offered during the summer. Depending on the student's situation, receipt of Northwestern Scholarship during the summer may cause Summer Session to count as one of the student's twelve quarters of aid eligibility. The student would be notified if this were the case, and this information should be carefully considered before making any academic plans.
Summer Session aid applications are available from the
Office of Financial Aid each year in April (see Application
Materials : Summer Session Aid Application) and the
application deadline is typically in June. For Summer Session
2009, financial aid materials submitted for the 2008-09
academic year will also be reviewed to determine an appropriate
family contribution. Those who have not previously applied
for aid should contact a Financial Aid Counselor to find
out what types of aid they might be eligible for, and what additional forms will be necessary.
Although we may process aid for Northwestern students studying
abroad on affiliated programs, we are not able to process
aid for students studying at other United States campuses
or abroad on unaffiliated programs.
Visiting students are not eligible for financial assistance
from Northwestern. These students should instead consult the
financial aid office at their home institution regarding possible
eligibility for portable funding.
Please note that the Office of Financial Aid monitors the
enrollment status of summer aid recipients throughout the
term, and may adjust financial aid awards if actual enrollment
differs from the expected enrollment reported on the Summer
Session Financial Aid Application.
